The original GAT-12 Skipray Blastboat was developed before the Clone Wars. It was based on the //Turbostorm//-class Gunship. The GAT-12h blastboat was introduced prior to the Battle of Yavin. Initially, they were sold to the Empire, but the Empire didn’t buy many, so Sienar Fleet Systems introduced them to the open market. Since that time, many other GAT-12 variants have been created.

Some consider the Skipray Blastboat to be a small capital ship, citing its shields, hyperdrive, and extensive armament.
