Tightbeam Rentenna:
A Belgardi technology first implemented on the Punisher Pocket Cruiser, then incorporated into the Immolator Cruiser, and henceforth unto all Belgardi craft the rentenna uses a tiny, fixed, short range transmitter, which can communicate with other tightbeam rentennas. Designed to punch through even the most powerful jamming it is heavily encrypted, and can send sensitive messages without fear of being intercepted. Not designed for long range communications, and non compatible with other forms of communication, the rentenna is primarily used for ship to ship communication between Belgardi vessels in heavy jamming.
Laser Gattlings:
A cylindrical formation of 5 barrels situated on a slightly overpowered traditional laser cannon, the laser gattling is a close defense weapon that can be used against both starfighters and missiles. The collection of barrels rotates at extremely high speeds, splitting the laser bolts into a multitude of bolts, though at only a fraction of the power. Laser gattlings are often used to through up waves of "flak" to shield certain areas of the ship.
Deciever Shield Masker:
A device created with the intention of confusing advanced targeting computers, the Deceiver generates a thin, uniform layer of energy over the ship's primary shields. This layer is thin enough that standard weapons fire passes unaffected through it- however, sensor emissions bounce off the masker, giving the Maelstrom a standard shield profile even if sections of the shield have been knocked out or reinforced with extra power.
Splatter Torpedoes:
Designed to aide in the detection of cloaked vessels, splatter torpedoes are fired from traditional warhead tubes, but instead of high explosives are filled with charged particles that are easily detected by standard sensors. Fired in a pattern, or at areas suspected to contain cloaked vessels, the particles are monitored by the ships sensors. If they form around an area, and create a definite shape, when cross checked against visual or other sensor readouts of the area, then a cloak ship can be "seen". The sudden disturbance of the particles can also be monitored to follow the "wake" of a cloaked ship as it moves.
Erratic Concussion Missiles:
The Janissary class was designed around this unique missile and its underlying concept. Faced with a constantly expanding array of new technologies designed to reduce the effectiveness of missiles, the Janissary design team focused its efforts on developing a weapon less susceptible to traditional methods of protecting craft from projectiles. The two primary methods of deflecting warheads are particle shields and defensive cannons. Basically a modified concussion missile, several techniques have been employed to attempt to circumvent these:
1) Constantly shifting random maneuvering-
The primary method utilized to defeat defensive laser weapons, miniature maneuvering jets are placed on the outside of the missile's body. Slaved to a computer, the jets fire at random intervals in rapid succession, pushing the missile in a wildly unpredictable path. In tests against standard quad-laser cannons, this innovation alone decreased the number of missiles destroyed by countermeasures by up to 85 percent. Unfortunately, the pattern makes the weapon highly inaccurate- Erratic missiles are only effective against against fighters in a general sense: they can not target fighters individually, but could be used against large swarms or concentrations. While controlled tests demonstrated that most warheads do manage to hit their target vessels, the dispersion of hits is often over a greater area, and there is much greater number of complete misses when compared with standard concussion missiles.
2) Laser Reflective Plating-
Reflective alloy that can deflect low powered blaster beams. Not by any means 100 percent effective, but allows the missile to survive glancing blows or light "flak" of defensive fire.
3) Blast warheads-
Particle shields use anti-protonic forces to annihilate any matter that comes into contact with them. As the Erratic missile approaches enemy particle shields, the nose cone of the missile is jettisoned forward, and detonates a small wide area explosion. Theoretically this will dissipate the particle shield momentarily, allowing the Erratic to pass through particle shield unscathed. Variations in response time by the particle shield (as well as the timing of the jettison) can limit effectiveness.
Bombard Heavy Torpedoes:
Roughly two and half times larger than standard proton torpedoes, the name of this weapon implies its purpose. Bombard torpedoes are lumbering behemoths, traveling at speeds comprable to older snubfighters or bombing craft. To compensate for their relative lack of speed, the Bombards are lightly shielded and constructed of a much thicker skin than most torpedoes. They pack a considerable punch, but often their greatest contribution to a salvo is to draw significant portions of an enemy’s countermeasure fire. Bombards also have the ability to be fired with their shields disabled, allowing them to travel faster than usual. Still fairly slow, this tactic is best utilized at short ranges.
Description:
Designed as a support vessel, the Janissary is a highly specialized vessel designed to fill a niche market. Nearly helpless against most enemy ships, the Janissary boasts only 20 laser gattlings for point defense, otherwise relying on other vessels for defense. Much of its internal space is dedicated to holding a vast number of warheads of various types, galactic standard and Belgardi orginal designs. The ship has a small crew and is notoriously cramped as a result. The vessel's trademark is the Erratic class missile, which creates mass confusion on the battlefield as the warheads corkscrew and spiral around upredictably.
The four heavy torpedo launchers allow the Janissary to act a seige monitor, pounding fixed enemy defenses, or slow moving capitals with the slow but tremendously powerful Bombard heavy torpedoes.
Available, as with the majority of Belgardi craft, on a retail basis the ship is slated to go into mass production immediately and be ready for sale/use in the very near future.
