The new Colonial Mk II Destroyer was commissioned by Admiral Mar-Veil to as a replacement for its predecessor in his campaign to enlarge the scale of the Colonial Defense Fleet. It was designed and constructed by Colonial Technologies.

This new starship is technically a Missile Destroyer unlike the multi-purpose vessel it will replace. It carries a considerable missile and torpedo compliment, moderate starfighter manifest and powerful defensive screens. While not as heavily armored as larger battleships the Colonial is reasonably well reinforced and swift enough to compensate for this vulnerability. Fast sublight engines and extensive maneuvering measures make the Colonial a surprisingly nimble ship for its size. In active deployment the Colonial destroyer will see duty in CDF fleets alongside other Colonial Technologies starships.

The destroyer has a single flight deck which has been fully utilized to accommodate the ships embarked compliment of starfighters and troopships. Furthermore the deck can be cleared to make room for a single large sized transport though doing so severely limits the ability to launch or recover starfighters.

In fleet actions the Colonial can screen larger class vessels from starfighter and missile attacks. Mounted on its hull are forty Point Defense Auto-Cannons; these are highly effective at engaging starfighters and missiles at close range. Additionally the wide array of missiles aboard the destroyer provides the ship with a wide range of combat ability which can be shifted from capital to sub-capital scale according to the weapons fired.

Particle/Ray shields are generated by a powerful primary core comparable to other ships of similar description though these shields are not notably stronger or weaker then the galactic standard. Blisters on the rear aft section of the destroyer can deploy electronic countermeasures.

Ablative Armor: The armor undergoes a state change upon impact (when struck by laser-based weapons) and vaporizes through endothermic processes which absorb and disperse the heat energies across a wider surface area thus lowering the total effective damage of the weapon.

Reactive Hull: When the hull is struck with an explosive (non-laser) based assault sufficient to surpass the Ablative Armor packets of concussion absorbing material detonate and disperses the force of the explosion away from the hull of the ship. This is achieved through a honey-comb like molding process applied to the hull plating prior to construction.

The Colonial destroyer is an incredibly nimble and swift ship for a craft of its size and in fact borrows many of its maneuvering inspirations from the HyperFighter design schematic. Primarily the destroyer achieves its speed from a triple bank of sublight engines which are further modulated by some of the galaxies largest thrust-vector controllers; these are massive vents which direct the force of the ships ION engines in a particular direction. The fact that these engines are second to none in potential power out-put only further accentuates this ability. Azimuth thrusters are located throughout the ships turning angles, and though they are insufficient to orient the ship without assistance, they do provide a key additional maneuvering adaptability. The majority of the ships directional control comes from repulsors, of which the ship has many.

Like all large Colonial Defense Fleet vessels the Colonial Mk II destroyer has two ‘bridge’ areas. The first is actually the Observation Bridge and has the distinction of actually being called a bridge. The second is the Combat Information Center. The former is located near the high point of the ships mast. This area is equipped with all the necessary controls to steer the ship while the CIC, which is located deeper in the ship and out of harms way, is equipped with all the same and more as it is designed to coordinate the actions of the entire vessel and additional escorts. And to affect repairs while underway the Commonwealth has an extensive machine shop which is capable of expansive repair efforts and mandated by the Colonial Fleet Manifest.

The Colonial destroyer relies heavily on its missile and torpedo compliment to attack and engage enemy forces and it does this well with a variety of weapons which are designed to fill a number of roles. Presented below is a breakdown of the missile and torpedo compliment of the vessel.

*Thirty (30) Assault Concussion Missile Tubes: These are ‘stacks’ that fire vertically from tubes located within the hull of the ship itself. They measure 3.5 meters long and are Capital scale weapons that are built to effectively destroy combat-purposed vessels of full capital scale. Incorporated are; A) electronics suite which is designed to receive telemetry data prior to and following deployment equipped with a moderate combat tracking sensor B) fusion based warhead capable of considerable damage C) Ferrocarbon construction and solid fuel rockets.

*Thirty (30) Heavy Proton Missile Turrets: These are turret based weapons which fire a salvo of five proton torpedoes. The torpedoes they fire include an explosive charge sheathed in a field of high-energy particles and are designed to engage starfighter and transport sized sub-capital military craft accurately and efficiently. Prior to being fired the weapons are encoded with the ION signature of a target, and then they deploy and track the enemy target.

*Twenty (20) Medium Concussion Missile Turrets: These are turret based ‘pods’. They can fire a salvo of three starfighter grade concussion missiles. The missiles measure a meter long and incorporate a very limited heat-sensing tracker, solid fuel rocket and duranium construction.

*Twenty (20) Starflare Torpedo Tubes: These are diverse, multi-use weapons which have been purchased from the Kashan government and equipped aboard the Colonial class destroyer.

The destroyer carries an extended range sensor suite which enables it to act as a scout on the edge of Coalition formations as required. A limited DER and full scanner set are standard aboard the destroyer which can further extend its operational range through the use of its HyperFighter squadrons.

The Colonial starships do not waste space. Lower starfighter compliments and crew requirements are indicative of Gestalt starships, but none of this volume is lost in the process. Limited flight decks are compensated for with incredibly thick armor and construction. Ultra-heavy construction ideologies are common in all similar capital scale starships. This is done for various reasons; the Colonies have a limited population base and so treasure and prize each life with considerable protection, additionally the Colonies are asset rich which enables the designers to dedicate more time and energy to assuring the durability of their capital-scale craft. Furthermore, all additionally ‘freed up’ areas have been repurposed to accommodate advanced systems protocols such as enlarged power cores, redundant primary procedures and more.

The Colonial Mk II destroyer was developed by Colonial Technologies and overseen by Vice Commodore Shipwright which implies a certain attention to detail which the CDF has come to expect and reply upon. The new Colonial-class will replace the previous, smaller destroyer and see that line scrapped, however; a handful of the ships will be kept in long refit.
