The Provincial-class Dedicated Escort Super Carrier, or DES-000, is the largest starship to be designed and constructed by Galactic Technologies with patronage provided by the Galactic Coalition of Planets.

The Provincial has a four-stage defensive system designed to track and engage hostile threat targets on multiple tactical vectors based on range, velocity and vector. This system is comprised of forty point-defense auto guns which fire solid particle projectiles at an extremely high rate of fire, twenty focused array tractor beams which are fundamentally directed tractor-beam projectors which are crewed by a gunnery dispatch and manually fired with computer guided assistance and fifteen heavy flack cannons that fire heavy bursts of ablative materiel. Each of these systems was innovated by Colonial Research & Development, they are modern updates on older style defensive techniques which are designed to supplement the reactive shielding and ablative armor of the Colonies starships. The auto-cannons are optimized to deal with starfighter attacks and similar sized attack vehicles leaving the focused array beams and flak cannons to deal with missile based attacks. Defense against energy based weapons comes in the form of powerful primary and secondary reactive shielding and thick layers of ablative armor.

Ablative Armor: The armor undergoes a state change upon impact (when struck by laser-based weapons) and vaporizes through endothermic processes which absorb and disperse the heat energies across a wider surface area thus lowering the total effective damage of the weapon.

Reactive Hull: When the hull is struck with an explosive (non-laser) based assault sufficient to surpass the Ablative Armor packets of concussion absorbing material detonate and disperse the force of the explosion away from the hull of the ship. This is achieved through a honey-comb like molding process applied to the hull plating prior to construction.


The Provincial feature no direct offensive capabilities of its own and instead relies upon its considerable starfighter compliment to inflict damage on unfriendly targets. Furthermore, the Provincial can use some or all of its starfighters to additionally support its already considerable defensive screens. The Provincial is perfectly suited to starfighter screening tactics, it maintains a low attack profile on its forward dimensions while packing heavy armor and the majority of its defensive weapons onto dorsal and ventral surfaces. Unable to operate independent of escort vessels the Provincial carries an extensive communications and sensors package which enables it to act as a command ship as it is always assigned in task force formations.

The Provincial, in its role as a dedicated carrier, has a total capacity of 180 starfighters. These units are broken down into five wings with three squadron’s per. Each squadron is composed of twelve starfighters. The composition of each squadron is static; three wings being comprised of uniform units while the remaining two wings provide special tactical squadrons of mixed craft.

The Provincial has two flight pylons; a single launch deck is tucked into the underside of each pylon well within the primary defensive radius of the carrier. These flight decks are incredibly wide at the mouth and tapered to allow for maximum launch and recovery speed. Naturally protected by their position relative to the combat orientation of the Provincial class carrier the ship still mounts independent reactive shield generators mounted in the upper corners of the flight deck to provide additional defense. A weapons installation comprised of one of each defensive unit is also located above and behind the entry.

Like all large Colonial Defense Fleet vessels the Commonwealth has two ‘bridge’ areas. The first is actually the Observation Bridge and has the distinction of actually being called a bridge. The second is the Combat Information Center. The former is located near the high point of the ships mast. This area is equipped with all the necessary controls to steer the ship while the CIC, which is located deeper in the ship and out of harms way, is equipped with all the same and more as it is designed to coordinate the actions of the entire vessel and additional escorts. And to affect repairs while underway the Commonwealth has an extensive machine shop which is capable of expansive repair efforts and mandated by the Colonial Fleet Manifest.

The Provincial is a dedicated carrier that is extremely well suited to that role. It is a heavily fortified launch platform with powerful defensive measures and a considerable turn of speed. Designed to be the backbone of Colonial task forces and become a visible symbol of Colonial integrity, the Provincial is an expensive starship that features all the most modern technologies working alongside those better suited to the needs of the Colonies. Powerful communications equipment work in tandem with an advanced sensor suite to provide in depth telemetry data and so further dispense that information to the rest of its deployment units. As a Colonial protector, the Provincial has a very unique ability; it can convert its extensive flight deck to passenger room. This is an extremely uncomfortable accommodation which, when utilized, will often see the flight deck inactive during the period of transport. In the event of an emergency, however, the flight deck of each Provincial-class starship can become a refuge in the event of a Colonial catastrophe. The total capacity has never been fully examined. The bridge of the Provincial is located on the forward surface between the flight pylons while the Command Operations Center is located aft of that and somewhat deeper into the structure of the starship. Like all Colonial starships it features a comprehensive machine shop which enables the ship to affect repairs upon itself and its compliment of starfighters alike. It is an exceedingly well designed, stable starship.
