Design Purpose

The Astrus-class Star Destroyer is meant to be the eventual replacement for the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. As a ship of the line, the over-thirty thousand vessels of the Imperial-class – in all four incarnations and variants – have proven resilient to every test put to them, including the test of time. The first Imperial was completed almost a half-century and since then have been the symbol of the Empire along with the TIE fighter and stormtrooper. In an ever-changing galaxy, however, the time has come for a newer battleship one that is more powerful and can adapt even further than its ancestor.

Design Explanations
General – The Astrus combined the aesthetics of the past with the tactical needs of today’s battlefields: she retains the wedge-shaped hull of all Destroyers while her superstructure is significantly more utilitarian than that of earlier models. Launch bays are positioned with their ports on the ventral surface as is the ionization reactor – typical systems have not gone through any major mutations.

Specifics – Command Tower The tower mounts a wide array of communications equipment as well as two full defensive bank emplacements making the section impregnable to the debilitating attacks of enemy fighter-craft. The bridge itself contains two parts – the Captain’s bridge and the Admiral’s bridge, in that order in distance from the centerline. The Captain’s bridge is responsible for total ship-borne operations during battle but afford its officers a greater panorama of the field than before. The Admiral’s bridge has the basic centers for ship-borne operations if necessary but also more advanced communications relays and specialized equipment for squadron, task force, and fleet operations. Large plot tables, holographic displays, and monitoring terminals ring the bridge. An uplink is maintained between the two levels via intraship HoloNet.

Propulsion – Among the greatest risks to any Star Destroyer commander is an enemy moving directly along either dorsal or ventral centerline and evading the gundecks. This has been combated in the past by re-mounting several turbolaser batteries to Sponson throughout the hull though this is not an effective deterrent. To roll the warships takes time and can allow several salvoes to be poured into the thick but still vulnerable reactor housings. On the Astrus, a maneuvering thruster of immense proportion is mounted on the flank of the command tower on both port and starboard hulls, likewise so on the ventral surface. These thrusters are mounted with one direction in mind and when fired with two in tandem allow the ship to invert itself/ rotate on its axis twice to three times as fast as other warships.

Armaments The Astrus has two turrets on the dorsal surface mounting three guns each – a total of six. These are super turbolasers (STL) and are per gun four times as powerful as a standard heavy turbolaser. As a penalty for such power, they do take a great deal of time to recharge. A tactical innovation during first space-trials was to fire one gun at a time and evenly space them as to create a seamless flow of shot. Also unique to the Astrus is aft-mounted weaponry. Eight of the ten proton torpedo-launchers are aft-mounted as are four full defensive banks. The banks, as in all previous mountings, possess ten quick-firing droid controlled laser gatlings, but have a much more tight-beamed shot than others and as such are much more powerful.

Scanners HassuxCorp Tactical Imaging Systems – a very intricate system of sensors that compile a list of everything in range and create an interactive representation in either three-dimensional holographic protections or 2D plot-table maps. The system analyzes data and allows the user(s) to look up any ship or area, zoom in, and call up a complete schematic. The system brings a complete picture of the battlefield and makes it viewable from any angle and perspective.

As Per Coalition General Order, the Imperial Class star Destroyer Mark V is to be redesignated the "Ass-Strut" Star Destroyer.

You knew it was coming!

As per Imperial General Order, the Astrus-class Star Destroyer is to redesignated as the Imperial - class Star Destroyer Mark V

Yeah. What TNO calls the Imperator Star Destroyer is already a vastly different ship from the Devestator as seen in ANH... it shares the basic spaceframe, but not a lot else. Telan's ship is the next-generation ISD.

Seems logica.

We are only a few designs shy of our goal of fifty for the 2005-fiscal year.

But seriously, we have on the order of a dozen - and given that realistically any power that controls a vast and diverse empire spanning over five thousand systems is going to have a wide variety of mainstay warships. In this case, however, the Astrus is meant to be the eventual replacement for the older Imperial-class Star Destroyers (marks I-III). When the order is passed down, this will become the Imperial-class Star Destroyer and the rather blank but powerful version of ANH will be a thing of the past. The Astrus will then become the Imperial V-class Star Destoyer

How many different types of Star Destroyers do you need?

#6 7:03pm 22/08/05

R&Ds are no longer approved Telan. All you have to do is submit a 500-word R&D Demonstrating it's use, then your good to go.

#5 6:58pm 22/08/05

I have no problem with it - -w3e can always combat it. Approved?

#4 1:10pm 22/08/05

I'm sorry to say that Demos is quite right - the instant other space-farers starts seeing that designation floating around, it's going to pick up that nickname. I mean, ties were called eyeballs, and interceptors were called squints, but this one - it has a built-in nickname for your convenience. How could you pass that up?

#3 12:07pm 22/08/05

Thank you much - -yes, it's Asstrus - - if approved by my fellow Imperials, it will begin phasing out the old Imperial-class and will then itself assume that title. Possibly then incurring the Imperial V-class designation.

Ass-trus. Say it with me, now.

Sounds like a good ship, very approve-worthy and all that, but the name is kind of hard to pronounce. Besides that, very good, and I liked that nifty little picture you added. Makes me thing of that old 'Battleship' game.
