Observer R&D 6: Carrier and support cruiser

[FYI I based the design off of star treks Defiant. It has the basic layout of the star treks Defiant. I had to heavely modify to make space for the system requirments increasing the size of the ship to make room for other systems. I repeat it is only based on the Defiants ship design.]

Speciallizing abilities:
Modular fighter Module system-

Designed for the Modualar Observer fighter. Each of the four docking bays carrys 3 types of fighter modules. The Modules can be interchanged within the ship itself.

Cloaking device: double blind system.
Special systems: Imperial Computer Combat Predictor.

In order to accomadate the need for a long range unit for exploration the Observers looked for a design that would be able to work with the Modular Fighter. Someing that would be able to support it in a versitile manner that would complement the fighter's abilities. They wanted something that was small and fast, and yet, had enough fire power to be an effective combat unit if the situation called for it.

After looking through tall the various ships the engineers came to the Adz class Destroyer. The ship was small and fast. capable of using a skeleton crew with all of it's automated systems and it could carry several fighters. The design fit the system requirements but the retangular design left them wanting more.

The Designers decided to Design their ship like a disk in order to make use of the space a circular design allowed. the first thing that they designed were the engines. A full third of the ship was devoted to those systems. There were the rear most engines and then there were the two side engines. The side engines are so large that they run two thirds of the length of the ship before they end. Additional engine size forced the designers to increase the over all length of the ship to increase the efficiency of the power output. This allows the ship to reach speads simular to the adv destroyer and even slightly surpassing them.

The larger engines also supply much needed power to the ships systems. It is armed with 8 quad lasers (four on top and four on the bottom. One on each corner of the disk like ship.), 4 proton torpedo tubes (two in the front and two in the rear. One of the front ones also doubles as a probe launcher.), and 4 heavy turbo lasers and four heavy ion canons locked in the forward position in the front of the craft. The Ion canons sitting between the 4 Turbo lasers.

The ship's enhanced power allows for strong shields and a molecular bonding process allows for addtional protection to the hull of the ship when shields fail.

An important feature is the layout of the fighter bays. There is no single docking bay instead there are four modular fighter bays. They are designed to each hold one modular fighter and three fighter modules. The modules can be changed inside the ship. Allowing the fighters to change to a given situation. There are two bays in the bottom front of the ship and two bays in the top rear. This feature allows the ship to save space for other systems and get the fighters out in mid combat. becuase at any given point their are two fighter bays that can face away from an attacking ship.

The Observers prefer to avoid a fight if they can. So in order to allow a quiet escape the ship has a cloaking device build into the engineering section. The double-blind system was difficult to adapt to this size of a ship. The power requirments take shields and energy weapons off line only leaving torpedos for use.
Speed is also cut by a full third when the cloak is used. This fact was actually used to their advantage the designers made it so that the system actually emmits less of an ionic trail to increase the stealth capability by decreasing speed and power out put. But the advantage of a cloak out wiegh any problems that are faced.

Comparable ship:

Adz Class Destroyer

Model: Adz Class Destroyer
Manufacturer: Imperial Shipyards
Designation: Inter-System Patrol/Customs Craft

Length: 150 meters
Crew: 36
Troops: 8
Cargo Capacity: 400 metric tons
Consumables: 6 months
Hyperdrive Multiplier: x0.55
Hyperdrive Backup: x12
Speed: 83 MGLT
Hull: 162 RU
Shields: 600 SBD

Weapons: 3 Quad Laser Cannon and 3 Ion Cannon Batteries.

Onboard Craft: 6 TIE Series Fighters.

This Imperial starship design is used as a patrol ship in many of the outlying regions of the galaxy, and was developed just after the death of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Their primary armament consists of three quad laser cannons and three dual ion cannons. They can achieve 0.55 past lightspeed, and maintained six fighters within their bays.

One of the primary technological advances used in the Adz Class Destroyer is the inclusion of an array of slave circuitry that allows a crew of 24 to handle virtually every system. At 150 meters in length, the Adz Class patrol destroyer require 12 gunners and can transport up to 8 passengers and 4 prisoners in its brig.

Well this WAS posted before the rule came arround that you had to RP out getting such technology so I guess we're gonna have to RP getting it now, but if that is the only issue then could this be approved just that we're not allowed to build it at all until we RP getting the cloaking tech? Unless there is some other reasons for not approving it yet...

I would like to know how you got your hands on an imperial cloak, one of the rarer items around.

Well I modified the Design a bit seeing as no one would answer any of my questions about their inhereint problems with the original design.

The ship now has 65 more meters on it.

with the additional size I made a few more modifications.

I there is now only a single rear docking bay, rather then two sepparate ones, with two exits on either side of the top rear of the ship.

That bay now holds two more modular fighters.

Becuase of the larger size I saw a need to add 4 more quad lasers. Two on top and two on bottom. Bringing the total number of quads per side to 6. There is more space to cover hence more turrets. This along with two more heavey Turbo lasers up front for a slight addition to forward fire.

The larger size also brought an increase in shields. This ship is based on the Adz destroyer. The size increase would result in slightly larger engines then my first design so the shields are increased accordingly.

Hull rating has been dropped as requested.

In addition to adding 50m please reduce your RU rating by 150

Beff what exactly are you looking for in reguards to a cloak description. You are right double-blind is double blind. Either way you lose all sensor capacity while it is engaged. Is that the kind of mention that you require? Exactly what the double-blind cloak shield is?

Also note the comparison to the Adz Destroyer then. So it is all unreasonible in reguard to being based off of the Adz Destroyer then.

I am using equivalent tech that is the only reason that I am mentioning those details.

I could leave the fact that it is based on a Star trek ship out completely and just say that it is based solely on the Adz designs and is a more advanced version of the Adz Destroyer. If I did then no one would make such remarks to the ST connection.

So please consider it in reguards to a different design of the adz.

And what part of the above comparison seems unreasonible chadd? And why?

Those are the real questions that i am posing.

I'm reading over your posts Vonta and I only find you stating that "it is reasonable in Star Trek".

But this isn't Star Trek, it's Star Wars, I believe there are a few differences therein. I mean what's reasonable in Saving Private Ryan or Starship Troopers isn't going to be reasonable here.

You'll have to adjust accordingly or this whole thing will be disapproved.

You have yet to respond to my comparison of this ship's design to that of the Adz class Destroyer. This ship is a larger more modified version of the Adz. And as such it has simular abilities. All that you have addressed as that it is too small not specifics on how come it is too small.

Name

Craft: Observer fighter carrier
Based on Model: Adz Class Destroyer

Ship Type

Type: Observer carrier= cruiser
Adz = cruiser

Ship shape

Shape of design:Obsever carrier= disk like
Adz = Rectangular

Number of decks per ship

Decks: Observer carrier= 5 decks
Adz= While I can find no mention of how many decks
that there are I can make the assumtion that
becuase small smaller ships such as the
correlian corvette use up to 5 decks that it
uses at least 6 decks.

(The defiants design only calls for 4 decks the SWU version that also was based on the Adz type cruiser required a that a fifth deck be added to the bottom of the ship.)

Mathematically what shape can hold more space

Rectangle vs. a circle

The circle can hold more space then a rectangle.

Ship lengths

length/Diameter: Observer carrier= 200 meters
Adz = 150 meters

(A circular design can hold more space then the rectangular shape of the Adz. And the additional fifty feet add even more space internally then the adz class destroyer.)

Crew and passengers

Observer cruiser=
Crew: 60
Passengers: 10

The adz=
Crew: 36
Troops: 8

(The Observer carrier has more systems to monitor so it needed a slightly larger crew. Then number of passengers is only slightly larger.)

Cargo Capacity

Observer Carrier=
Cargo Capacity: 100 metric tons

Adz destroyer=
Cargo Capacity: 400 metric tons

(The Observer carrier carries 300 tons less cargo It has a smaller cargo bay then the Adz to make more room for the Four sepparate fighter bays.)

Consumables

Observer Cruiser=
Consumables: 5 years

Adz cruiser=
Consumables: 6 months

(I well modify this detail to reflect the adz type for more short term usage.)

Hyper drives

Observer Cruiser=
Hyperdrive Multiplier: x2
Hyperdrive Backup: x16

Adz class destroyer=
Hyperdrive Multiplier: x0.55
Hyperdrive Backup: x12

Sublight speeds:

Observer carrier=
Speed: 87 MGLT

Adz class destroyer=
Speed: 83 MGLT

(The two are simular in speed but by using the defiants layout I have determined that once I get rid of the obsolete warp nacels for the SWU that there was room for two enormous side engines. Ones that can push the Observer carrier to speeds simular too and even slightly faster then the Adz. the engine designes would be simular as well only the Observer carrier would be more elongated then the Adz engines. If any thing if I have the sized estimations correct the engines of the Observer Carrier would be larger then those of the original adz.)

Weapons

(The lay out of the defiant in the link that I provided has space alloted for the for proton torp launchers on the ship. The Ion canons and the Turbo lasers replace the Pulse phaser canons on the Defiant. The star wars version is simular to the Star trek version in the fact that they are lock in one direction. They can only fire in the direction that the ship is facing becuase they are not based on turrets. Thus they can be controled from the bridge rather then by a crew man. The quad turbo lasers take up relitively little space on the ship. Each on it based on each corner of the disk just on the edge of the two enormous side engines. Completely out of the way of the dockig bays)

Observer Cruiser=

Weapons:
4 Heavy turbo lasers
4 heavy Ion canons
Weapons:
8 quad laser turrets
Locations:
4 top
4 Bottom
Weapons:
4 Proton Torpedoe launchers
Locations: Two frontal
Two rear
1 Frontal launcher- Doubles as a probe launcher
Payload: 12 per tube

Adz class Destroyer=
Weapons: 3 Quad Laser Cannon and 3 Ion Cannon Batteries.

(The adz is smaller and becuase of this has less armament capabilities. Larger engines supply the additional power to the weapons systems to make use of them and explain where the power comes from.)

Hull

Observer cruiser=
Hull: (600 RU)
Armor: Molecularly bonded armor (additional shielding)

Adz class destroyer=
Hull: 162 RU

(The observer cruiser would have a higher armor class becuase of the fact that it is a larger ship. But in addition to that fact it also has molecularly bonded armor to add aditional armor onto the ships stats.)

Shields

Observer Carrier=
Shields: (800 SBD)
Back up shields: (300 SBD)

Adz class destroyer=
Shields: 600 SBD

(Again the Observer carrier is based on the Adz destroyer so it would have simular shields to the Adz. Being that the Observer carrier is a larger vessel the the adz the Observer ship would have stronger shields. In addition to that the larger engines add the neccesary power used to make the shields of the observer craft stronger.)

One board craft

Observer Carrier= 4 docking bays containing the following.
3 Observer Modules
1 Athersprite 7 fighters.

Adz destroyer=
Onboard Craft: 6 TIE Series Fighters.

(The observer cruser has even more internal space becuase of it's circular design. It could hold, what is equal too, 7 or eight tie series craft with the size increase if I had decided for there to only be a single docking bay. Instead I wanted to maximize space usage by only useing 4 small docking bays that use up a minimum amount of space on the ship. They were designed to use only The modular fighter based on the Athersprite Delta 7 fighter and hold 3 fighter modules. If I need to go into specifics of how I downsize the docking bays then I shall in order to make it specific as to how I save on space with the 4 small fighter bays.)

Cloaking device

Observer carrier=
Cloaking device: double blind system.
Special systems: Imperial Computer Combat Predictor.

Adz destroyer=
none

(I based this system on the Star trek Defiant and becuase of that I subtracted the Warp core system becuase obviously in the SWU you do not need a warp core. The Hyper drive is significantly smaller then that and would take up farless room. I kept the Engineering deck area becuase it is dedicated to the cloaking device. There is where I get the area to implement it.)

Observer Cloak disadvantages

"The double-blind system was difficult to adapt to this size of a ship. The power requirments take shields off line only leaving torpedos for use.
Speed is also cut by a full third when the cloak is used." (7th paragraph, 2nd line)

Engines: (87 MGLT)
Cloak on(No stealth mode)= (58 MGLT)
Stealth mode:
Cloak on= (35 MGLT)
Cloak off= (58 MGLT)

(The disadvantages of using the cloak have been integrated as per the rules. The Ship loses significant speed when the cloak is in use. In addition to energy weapons. The only thing that works are the torpedo launchers. I even subtracted more speed in order for the ship to run in stealth mode while cloaked.)

Automated Systems

"One of the primary technological advances used in the Adz Class Destroyer is the inclusion of an array of slave circuitry that allows a crew of 24 to handle virtually every system. At 150 meters in length, the Adz Class patrol destroyer require 12 gunners and can transport up to 8 passengers and 4 prisoners in its brig."

(Every mention of the adz mentions it's use of slave circutry. The defiant is simular in this respect. In the Star trek universe it is heavely automated as well. The Star wars take on it is no different. It has the slave type circuts that allow the ship to be highly automated and maintain a relatively small crew to the ships size. In the same respect the Obsever craft has the automated systems as the Adz destroyer that it is based on.)

I went through the systems of the ship in this schematics link.

www.rollins.edu/startrekr...fiant4.htm

In my previous post I listed numbers for what I subtracted replaced and added for the SWU. If you guys don't look it over I can do it in detail as to how I modified the defiant type of layout to fit a star wars design based on that number system.

#7 1:23am 27/05/03

There is nothing wrong with creating a ship that resembles the Defiant, nothing I can think of. However, the Defiant is a Star Trek Technology, not Star Wars...

My compatriots requests seem sufficent, though; I will require a more indepth description of the cloak. Double-Blind is double blind.

You want I should deny it for this very fact?

This is star wars, not star trek.

The Rebel Faction
not
The Romulan Faction

They very well could have more room on their ship, becuase they use different technologies. I say again, make the changes weve asked for, or sit it out.

Here I have a schematic layout of the Defiant. The diagram lists every thing deck by deck on each of the decks I have changed varieds number allocattions in order to show what would be changed for the SWU. As it is now the design easily accomadates three shuttle bays. And this is for a ship that is only 172 meters long. My ship adds even more space that can be used for a third docking bay. Another aspect that I have to add is that the Adz class craft that I am basing this design on carries 6 tie class craft. And it is actually smaller then this R&Ded craft.

My point is that the space is there.

I'm fairly busy at the moment but, I will give this a very thourogh look-through in the next day or possibly two.

Avatar
#2 7:17pm 26/05/03

I would prefer that it stay as near 200 meters as posible. Another 50 meters would put it on par with a Nubulan b. And I want this ship to remain smaller then one. The ship is based on the Adz class destroyer. And my cruiser has a good 50 meters on it. Adding more length to the Adz type design would add more in the way of power to all systems.

Avatar
#1 6:46pm 26/05/03

up the ships size by 50m please, otherwise, Star Trek aside, it looks ok... your just going to have to wait on a ruling about our cloak tech. Quite foolhardy to submit a tech with cloak at this point...
