Anthos R&D :: Shadow Paint 2.0
Shadow Paint 2.0Developed by: Clakor Drive Yards
Designation: Starship Paint
Description
Shadow Paint 2.0 is the successor to the successful Shadow Paint originally developed by Clakor Drive Yards for the Bith Monarchy. Now a leader in design and manufacturing for the Anthos Republic, Clakor Drive Yards received a contract to improve upon the concept of Shadow Paint.
The original paint, while successful in that it performed its basic function well, had a few minor drawbacks that CDY sought to correct; the most notable problem was heat dissipation. The original paint provided excellent light absorption properties, however, once the light was absorbed, and converted into heat energy, it had nowhere to go. Since the paint was applied to a metallic surface, the heat simply bled into the craft, using the hull as a large heatsink. During normal usage, this provided no problems, life-support systems were simply adjusted to accommodate for the excess heat. However, when docked or patrolling near a sun or bright planet, indoor temperatures began to rise noticeably. The excess heat also had the tendency to crack the paint over time, requiring that the craft be stripped and repainted.
CDY fixed the heat problem by developing a heat-shield primer that is applied before the actual paint is applied. The primer doesn't allow thermal heat to penetrate to the hull of the craft, forcing the thermal heat to dissipate more slowly into space. The paint is also a lot more heat conductive, allowing the excess heat to bleed off very quickly.
In addition to solving the heat problem, CDY tweaked the paint formula to provide wider electromagnetic spectrum coverage. Since visible light is just part of a wide spectrum of light particles, it was a small (but complex) leap to the next level. Shadow Paint 2.0 is capable of absorbing all of the ROYGBIV visible spectrum, as well as Ultraviolet C, Ultraviolet B, Ultraviolet A, and Infrared.
Extreme amounts of any of the aforementioned radiation will generate extra heat, which in turn is bled off at a rapid pace.
Shadow Paint is applied in leau of regular paint once a craft is completed. The primer is first applied, then the actual paint is applied in a two-part solution. When one part of the solution comes in contact with the second, a hardening occurs, bonding the paint to the hull of its host craft.

I forgot the R&D time.
1/13/04
2/02/04
[edit: ten days short on the R&D time there]

Interesting...
Approved.

right...
well, i already approved, heh
In a vacuum, such as outer space, radiant heat barriers are very effective. In this air-free environment there can be no conduction (except through solid objects) so all heat transmission is by means of radiation. A radiant heat barrier on the outside of a space ship or satellite proves a very efficient insulator by reflecting back up to 95% of the radiant heat which strikes it. For this same reason, thermos bottles (ie. Dewars flasks) are also coated internally with aluminum radiant heat barriers.
So it appears that radiant heat is not transmitted, but rather simply sits there. I would suppose this would indeed create a trail of heat energy, if sensors pick up heat energy.
It is not my objective to create a complete cloak though, merely one that absorbs the electromagnetic spectrum.

Do you detect the ball, or the heat from the ball, though...
#7 11:30pm 14/01/04
heat energy = heat
I dont see a differance between this and detecting a ball of molten steel
#6 11:10pm 14/01/04
Does radiant heat energy transmit through vacuum?
#5 9:37pm 14/01/04
But wouldn't this just be big target for a type of "thermal sensor" ?
#4 11:40pm 13/01/04
There was no mention of any sort of heat dissipation with SP 1.0. I made this all up.
So, yes.

So instead of heat going into the vessel, it is instead, going out?

This will replace Shadow Paint 1.0, by the way.
