Hyperdrive Ratings... need help understanding them.. - OOC Discussion - Forums

Evening...

After creating my RnD (and I'm still refinning it, thats why I haven't made an RnD rp showing the ship in action) I kind of realized that I really don't know much about the hyperdrive rating or what it applys in terms of the ships.

If someone can explain to me the hyperdrive ratings - in terms of ship types (Starfighters, Frigates, Cruisers, Destroyers, etc.. etc.. etc.) I'd appriciate it as it'll help me better understand and better develop my capital RnD's

None. It is a theoretical rating for a theoretical method of transportation. It's all Science-Fiction/Fantasy anyway. We don't adhere to stats, or dice or etc etc etc...

So whatever you like, really, and works for your story is fine. I'm sure someone will post an actual break down of " X " hyperdrive ratings and you're welcome to use that but keep in mind that what it comes down to, in the end, is your story.

Anyway, I'd love to be the one to supply the statistical rundown but it might negativly affect my Liberal Slant here at TRF.

Hyperdrive rating is how fast your ship will travel through hyperspace. One of the fastest ships ever was the M. Falcon, it had a rating of x.5. This is really impressive and mostly unheard of. He did this with heavy modifications. Most modern naval ships have the rates of x1 or x2. Pretty much the lower the rating to faster the speed. Most freighters are x2 and over since those drives are cheaper. Fighters are also around x1 or x2.

From what I've been told, in order to say you have a drive faster than x1 you have to post an r and d for it to explain how you achieved such a high speed. If your ships are strictly for storylines with yourself you don't really need to post r and d, however.

It's largely irrelevant, anyway. Somebody might point out that a ship of a certain size could not achieve x1, but no one will ever look at your RP and say "actually, since your ships have class 2 hyperdrives, it will take them two more posts to reach me".

The smaller the number, the faster the drive. In general, military ships will be class 1 or 2, and civilian ships will be slower.

Demos is basically correct in my opinion.

Theoritically speaking though, having a faster hyperdrive could be considered to be an advantage, say if it is a race between two fleets (starting at the same point) to reach another point to either capture it or reinforce forces already there. It's fairly minute, but it could be a small advantage.
