Okay, so a buddy of mine just turned me on to this game called Engima: Rising Tide. It's a WWII naval simulator based in a silghtly altered reality of 1939 (altered in so far as to make a silghtly more action oriented game) and, in all honesty, I'm getting a kick out of it. The really cool part is it's all vocal prompts and the voice recognition program really does work...

However...

It's old and I'm quickly exhausting the level options... And I'm looking for more.

Dangerous Waters and Distant Guns look like good.

Anyone have any suggestions and/or comments on the genre? I'm looking for something more modern.

I used to love playing Silent Service on my C64. You could try finding that and an emulator, and get some true old-timey gaming in.

Well Enigma is more than just a Submarine Simulator. You can play anything all the way up to a Battleship with the patches that they are releasing for it.

Conversley, Destroyer Command is a fun Sim IMO, but you can only drive destroyers, although you can command squadrons of up to eight ships at a time.

Haven't been keeping up to date, but coming soon is a new naval sim that should be pretty awesome, called Navies At War.

NAVAL COMPUTER SIMULATION
Estimated release date Q4 2006
(Updated 12/11/05 - see our updates below!)
$39.99

Navies At War : 1890-1950 will be a military grade tactical naval combat simulation with future editions covering ironclads, fighting sail and possibly even modern naval combat. NAW is also being designed to be fully compatible with our upcoming Thunder at Sea v2.0 carrier and campaign naval simulator.

NAW is being designed to be the most authentic, detailed, and accurate surface combat simulator ever created. 60 years of naval combat will be covered with a massive, and expandable, database of hundreds of warship classes, upgrades, and refits. Combined with the TAS campaign simulator players will be able to fight out entire campaigns of carrier, aircraft, sub, and surface combat.

As for Submarine only, well a quick search found:

Where do I find these patches you speak of... and more importantly, how stable are they?

I enjoy the engine ERT uses but I'm exhausting the current options.

And yeah, the Silent Hunter series are okay... but not modern.

Silent Hunter III is supposed to be pretty good. Read about it on gamespot and thought about picking it up, but too many other games have my interest right now. I want to get Elder Scrolls 4 when it comes out (which is very soon I believe).

Hmm. I was expecting more from you, Hyfe, on the topic. I'm a lil' disappointed.

Did Titus just plug a C64 game?

What sort of turn around is it when Empire at War comes out and were all playing Battle Tank mods...

It's style. When you have the choice between cutting edge tech and the dated favs... Choose the older junk 'cos it's uber 1337.
