Comparing one to another requires degree.
The X-wing compared to the original Hex-winged TIE/ln fighter is superior every time.
X-wing compared to TIE Interceptor - 50-50. The Interceptor has four lasers and incredible speeds, allowing it to dogfight with the Xwing provided it is not hit.
TIE-Defender compared to X-wing - Defender wins all the time.

I'd go with the X-Wing. Put a TIE in atmosphere and it's useless. Plus, the original TIES aren't even hyperspace capable.

I know that - since I had to answer the question separately. The TIE/ln is a miserable craft who's only ability is speed and given the circumstances is more detriment than aide.

I think that the Interceptors and Defenders count as different ships than the one specified by the question. If the question is A New Hope TIE v.s. A New Hope X-wing, tthen it is up to debate. 1 on 1, X wing wins every time. In a battle situation, X-wings have a big advantage, but for different kinds of missions like hit-and-run, or defensive battles, it all depends on the circumstance. But the X wing is better because it doesn't have to rely as much on capital ships.
