As Recon pointed out, best thing is to read up on the rules and FAQ's first, then you are pretty much free to RP as and when you feel like it.
Take a bit of time to think about your character , (ie: Light, dark, neutral), and what he or she might be like, have a read upon other people's characters in the biography forum to get some ideas.
Don't worry about 'joining a faction' its not MANDATORY, in fact I'd say lurk for a bit get a feel for the place and then think about what group takes your interest.
