If you want, you can always jump into the Astra Astoria and start in a thread which says its open to all players. That's probably your best bet at getting into the RP, and it will also let you see how things work before you hit the big field.

Read the Rules and FAQ's (check sidebar), and then mosy on over to the Astral Astoria. That's probably the easiest way to get involved.
It works pretty much any way you want.

What precisely do you feel you need help on?... the rules?...some help with your 'character'? story ideas?...
You are quite free to just 'dive right in' with either an RP in the Astral Astoria, or to write an 'intro' for your character in the battlegrounds.
You can write whatever you want to write about, but I'd get to know the FAQ's and the rules first, as they might already help answer some questions you might have.
