The Portal news (as seen at therebelfaction.com) only seems to display if you are logged out. If you are logged in everything seems to be displayed the same, except the news in the center is absent. Is it supposed to be like this?

It shouldn't log you out, Trin, but the index and the forums don't seem to sync their templates. You can have a seperate template for each, which I find distracting. If it is logging you out, could you confirm it for me?
Hyfe, the portal news works fine for me. Why don't you try clearing your cookies, and if that doesn't work, I'll do some checking.

Yeah... I cleared all my cookies and it still does it.
I went to therebelfaction.com and it it was all fine and dandy with me as a guest. I went to the top right and logged in, and it took me automatically to the forums. When I tried to go back to the portal, the news box was not there as it had been before while I was logged out.

I'll help confirm. I was logged in, went to the portal, clicked on the forum link and found myself logged out.

Ok, I think I found the problem. In setting up the News & Announcements forum up so only Admins could post in it, I accidentally denied the Registered Users usergroup the right to view threads. Tell me if that worked.

I was logged into the forums...was still logged in when I went to the portal (I put a little comment in the shoutbox thingy while I was there too). When I clicked the link to go back to the forum, I got logged out.

Hmm. Well, try clearing your cookies, and see if you can duplicate it. I tried what you did about a dozen times (minus the shoutbox) but nothing happened.
I may have been working in the admin center at the time, too, and that may have caused the problem..
