Ah, the mystery of the sarlacc revealed. Pretty cool. I have the prequel (I and II at least) dictionaries somewhere. Always thought they were pretty neat. I have a couple that breakdown the vehicles/spacecraft as well; those are pretty fun.

I managed to get that fandangled 'new essential guide to the Force' - it's been very nummy reading up about all aspects of the Force, its powers and the factions that use it...

Isn't that one different from the rest of the new essential guides and is written kind of like a journal? I think I flipped through a couple of pages of it at a book store one time.

It is, yes, but it also has just plain written text about factions and such - there are journal entries, but also actual articles.
