What the heck is the status of the galaxy? Who's the big man on campus, who is near destruction. And is there an area where there are posted bounties or should I just ask around?
And, do I need to join a faction?

Like Irtar said, there is no need to join a faction. But there are more than a few factions about, and most of them cater to specific character ideas. For example, the Union does a lot of work with the galactic underworld, mercenaries, and morally dubious projects. And of course, there are other unique factions.

But we do have some star wars' classics, like TNO (the Empire) and the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

If you're looking for a faction type in particular, or want to know more about a faction, just let us know, or one of the faction members.

Underdogs...we have a few of those, actually. Namely the Palestar Crusade and the Alliance. At least in my opinion.

What the heck is the status of the galaxy?

Well, right now, its a kind of uneasy peace, otherwise best described as a cold war situation right now.
There are many big players involved, all with their own interests and agendas.

The Empire, otherwise known as 'The New Order' are currently the biggest faction, but not by much in the big scheme of things.

Faction-wise: The Empire, as for one man, hmmm, good question.
if you'd come around sooner, I would have said Simon Kaine, but he's sort've retired...

The Empire's figurehead correct me if I am wrong is still Daemon hyfe.

In this place, you never know.

And is there an area where there are posted bounties or should I just ask around?

If its Bounties you are after, try the Bounty Hunter's Guild (they have a faction on the main board, though its been renamed to Bunny Hunters, because its leader Beff Pike is essentially cute and cuddly at heart, (just don't feed him ok)
Of course you could always try posting an ad on the holonet (the Propaganda forum), though bear in mind in this enviroment, Bounty Hunter's are not always welcomed, but then thats nothing new...

And, do I need to join a faction?

No, not at all.
Stay freelance, if Bounty Hunting is your game, it can be profitable to play both sides.

Of course, the quickest and easiest way to learn , is to join a faction.

Take your time look around, get a feel of the place.
