As far as I know it's not just illegal here in America, but it's illegal in the majority of the countries on our planet.

You mean the dowry system ? It's not particularly uncommon, and there is often a certain logic to the idea (in the sense that the bride's side usually pays for the entire wedding and accompanying celebrations, etc.). Just depends on your perspective and the way you've been brought up.
