"What does..?" she started, thinking that her sensors showed where her ships were and therefore where to point her line-of-sight transmitters.

"Exactly, my Captain of Tarts! Just because you point a line-of-sight transmitter at a ship does not mean they will automatically get your transmission! You have to hit their receiver which is alot smaller and at the
distance we have spread out to evade the planetary batteries, issuing orders is now much harder."
Spreading out to evade planetary fire would not come anywhere near the distance that would exist between fleets on two sides of an enemy fleet. I'm not saying this should be taken as the word of god, but, it IS the word of Kaine, which is basically just as good.
