The Ossan troops spread out through wreckage of the town on Gash's order, securing their position quickly and efficiently.
Gash himself shook his head, looking from Kamon to Ade-Ay. "No, they were not killed by blasters. But we knew this. We've known this all along. Whatever is killing these people... doesn't operate in typical military fashion. It's not the Empire, it's not terrorists."
The first of them then flew over their heads and into their midst, then, originating from the wooded escarpments which surrounded the small settlement on all sides. Gash did not sense it; none of the Rogue Jedi sensed it. One of the military aides ran up to the Rogue Jedi Master, saying, "We've secured the city, sir," but that was as far as he ever got.
Before the man even stopped running, a projectile of some sort swooped in with a low buzz, impacting on his head with a sick thud sound. The man's skull instantly caved, and he fell to the ground, blood pooling about his corpse.
Instantly, Gash had his two lightsabers, one blue, one red, out and activated, immediately parrying another of the things with one of his blades. Suddenly, the air was thick with the things, little black murder-flies swarming in from all directions. "On your guard!" He shouted, as a great commotion began among the alerted Jedi. He turned to Kasien, saying, "All troops, on their guard. Shoot to kill anything that isn't Ossan."
As he slowly bent over the man's corpse, staying on guard even still, he stared into the remains of the aide's head. What he found were insectoid remains, crushed from the impact and some sort of small concussive blast. He straightened up, and parried several more of the bugs. "You can't sense them with the Force!" He shouted. Several men, mostly non-Jedi, fell about him, clutching serious wounds. "Reach out, feel the air move about you! Look for the sound of buzzing!"
And then the shooting started.
It began at the perimeter of the village, a great din of firepower pouring out into the forest as black figures in the distance moved from them. But the figures moved with such swiftness that they had soon closed to within meters of the village's edge, the soldiers doing their best to fight them off. They seemed to fight primarily hand-to-hand.
"Rush out and meet them!" Gash ordered. "Keep on your guard for the bugs." Most of the Rogue Jedi began to rush for the edge of village, as the enemy moved in on them from all sides, but some did not. Gash stopped running and looked back. "Go
now, god damnit! These are Vong! If you don't fight, you damn us all to a fate much worse than death!"
The last of the Jedi ran towards the combat, and Gash heard one of them say, "My god, there must be fifty of them."
