As probably the ultimate rocker of sexy borderline inappropriate girly sigs and avatars over the years, I have to say I started using them for attention.
When I first showed up on Star Wars RP boards about 10 years ago, no one paid any of my posts a darned bit of attention with my happy dancing frog as an avatar. I went out and found me a nice artist's rendition of Rebecca Romjin doing a spider crawl across the floor and within a day I had two roleplays and multiple conversations going on the boards.
Now, if I try to change my avatar, people get upset so Miss Bouncy stays.
On the flip side, I totally agree with what Beff said. You see very few elegant and beautiful women being used as avatars unless they have some part of their body hanging out.

Well that's their fault then. I'd RP with a woman no matter what avatar they had going for their character. Although I will admit that Damalis's avatar has provoked reactions from me, but they are probably not the kind a married woman would wish for.
