you failed, for instance, to address the idea that the decentralization of western nations has resulted in the discintigration of concepts like collective consciousness and national identity. whereas once nationalism was an idea central to the way many lived their lives, mass media, global commerce, rapid dispersal of information, and broad public discourse across multiple readily accessible mediums have made dissent the norm, rather than the exception. industry has turned borders into nominal lines on a map rather than important divisions. the rise of the conglomerate in the last half-century has seen the primary fidelity in society become a corporation, rather than a flag. communications technology has melded cultures, largely beyond the point of being distinguishable.

if you need proof of this you need only to look at how western nations wage war. supporting your country's involvement in conflict was once seen to be a moral imperative, but since the vietnam war, voices of dissent nearly outnumber the supporters. that may be because the battles of today are chosen, not obligatory, but maybe that's another reason for the discintigration of a collective identity in the west. nothing unites like a righteous war.

what does that mean? what does that have to do with anything? i said winston churchill is dead because he was part of an era where fealty to one's nation was seen as the principle indication of moral righteousness. most of his great oration was about that very subject. but most of the people who were old enough to remember those speeches are dead now, or soon will be. his symbol and what he stood for? honestly man i would be suprised if you even know what you're talking about.

Certainly, Britain's most 'famous' exports are examples of the supposed counter-culture. But you know what? That very counter-culture requires a strong culture to exist! By definition the counter-culture is merely opposition to the culture - so for the counter-culture to be popular, so must the culture be strong.

thank you mister dictionary for telling us what counterculture means! it's too bad that in your rush to help us understand prefixes, you didn't bother to mention anything of substance, or you might have been forced to acknowledge the fact that said counterculture has been popularized, embraced, and commercialized, to the point that many of its propents now rest at the pinnacle of our society. and also that the fame of the sex pistols will probably outlast the monarchy.
