"Well... it looks like there aren't any open hostilities between the two yet. That's good. Maybe things are back on track?"
"I wouldn't bank on that, sir." said an aide "They both say they'll return the ambassadors, but neither seems to want to reestablish the meeting. I think they're spooked."
"Yeah... and it still doesn't explain the third party..."
It was then that he witnessed the rogue ship's attack.
"What the hell was that?!"
"Sir! It appears one of the unknown ships turned on its' commander and disabled it! We've got a comm from the command ship of the unknowns, but the shot cut out its' communications - the message is badly garbled."
"Give me what we got, then." He took the message in hand, which read for them somewhat like this:
This is Fleet Admiral Arch- ... -divus 2nd Emergency Collasps Squadron. Coalition For- ... -e, and we will stand down. This doesn't need to end in a full scale battle wh- ... -destroy both worlds, we both have the ships, we both have the weapons, and I'm sure the two go-... -ddle of their system.
"Well, that's as clear as mud. Sounds unaggressive, though, but I don't like the sound of that 'destroy both worlds' bit." He rubbed his chin "No, I don't like this situation at all. What's the status on their rogue ships?"
"They're open targets, sir. We've recieved confirmation data from the unknowns to bring them down. Should I give the order to engage?"
"What? No! We don't know anything about this situation - in fact, I don't want anyone doing any firing. Here, give me that comm. Give me an open frequency, mark it as high priority. We're the galactic superpower here, right? They can't have us just shooting people we hardly know."
"What, it's rude to shoot a stranger?" said the aide with a smirk, as he passed the comm.
"No need for familiarity, I just think names are a good place to start with your enemies." replied the captain, who took the comm in hand. "All right, all armed vessels in the area, this is the captain of the Coalition Advance expedition. We repeat, stand down and be identified - all vessels, including the identified 'rogue' vessels. Any further aggressive actions by any party towards any other party will not be tolerated until we figure out who's who." He put the comm down, and frowned.
"Not exactly diplomatic, but we've wasted enough time. Whoever fires next, we target."
"Er... sir, isn't that a little trigger happy?"
"Do you appreciate the situation fully, lieutenant? An unidentified fleet has broken up a peace conference of two heavily armed nations and is now fighting itself and trying to get us involved. I think we can afford to lay down a little law and order, don't you?" He cursed quietly "This is ambassador work, where the hell are those two anyways?"
"You didn't actually ask for them back, sir."
"Aw hell, they can stay there - fat lot of good they'd do."
At this moment, in fact, the ambassadors were accomplishing very little good - unless you counted differing styles of righteous indignation as good.
Jargur's first response to hearing the comm was irritation "What, and we're not worth a mention?" but as he realized what the captain was planning he quickly stumbled to Tiosk, trying to look diplomatic and said "Your honour - er, your majesty - er, sir, or... um - hey listen! That captain's a nutjob. He does not speak for us - the Coalition I mean! I need to get on the comm right now, or he really will shoot the first one he percieves as a threat!"
Oaxaca, however, was more confused "Why is that Serendivus ship attacking his commander? Shouldn't we help them? If that ship crippled his commander with one shot, we should do something!"
