Peace signs are a direct contravention of governmental decisions to engage in war; disobedience begets anarchy and anarchy begets defeat - both intolerable outcomes.
There IS a Treason and Sedition law in Amerika you know - it is simply loosely enforced.
One must also remember that these documents were written at a time when disputes were settled among men with honour, when voting was a radical yet logical ideal, so long as it was kept within the ranks of the Intelligentsia. The laws have not changed with the times. During the American Revolution had you burned an American flag I guarantee that you would have been tarred and feathered if not worse.

As far as I know, that's a pretty important part of America's foundation.

wtf, Telan? Are you trying to make the argument that the human condition has somehow worsened in the past 200 years?
You burn an American flag now, and you're just as likely to be ostracised; not summarily executed. Freedom of expression cannot be over-ruled, Telan. Every goverment, in the entire history of man, that has attempted to censor human nature has collapsed.
Let me just say that I am exceedingly glad I do not live in the Idealist World that you seem to think is a reality.
