The Wii is basically a heavily updated and improved Gamecube, hardware-wise. It speaks the same languages. Nintendo also gets great yields on all of i's hardware, so almost every chip made goes out the door and into a Wii.
Sony? When the Cell processor was being designed, IBM had engineers quit because Sony A) wanted the impossible B) kept changing the design spec. http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/07/13/ibm_sony_cell_yield_revelation/
So the yields on the processor are crap, hence a terrible lack of PS3s. This also means that the PS3 is incredibly expensive to make.
