TRF is, to me, beyond Star Wars.
I haven't seen the original movies in years, and I hated the prequels with a passion. I only own the Thrawn Trilogy, which I haven't picked up in years. Star Wars is an extinguished flame for me. Its all about writing.
But to answer your question more directly, Demos is here because he has no life and he'd get the shit kicked out of him if he acted like he does here in real life.
