The Sacred Band of Thebes - a battalion of a thousand men of the Greek City-state of Thebes. They were said to be composed of five hundred-couples. It was from the glorious and nigh-unbeaten unit that the phrase "An Army of Lovers Cannot be defeated" came. Yes - they were gay, but then who was not in Greece/Rome???
