The books are so much trash in my opinion... They can be entertaining but they are no where near cannon. I mean a lot of things in them... just stupid, like ysalami or however they are spelt, these were merely for Zahn's story they seem a bit implausible. There are many other things, none of which spring to mind (it has been a while since I have read them) that are a little inconsistant and hard to swallow.
Some of the writer's are better than others of course and there writings are more consistant with plausibility and the movies.
According to Lucasfilm, the books are official unless in any way they are contradicted by the films or Lucas.

With out the books RPGs would be sorta boring. Few ships to chose from, few Force powers. Not many specicies. Books are good and bad depending on use.
