You have, apparently, read the bible like a book with this in your head: "Well, if its true, its gotta be absolutely literal. So, if its true, the world was created magically out of thin air with a couple of people and a gardin of paradise, and whenever anybody touches the arc of covenent they die. Wait, they die? What? Whats this here? God flooded the world? How many people would that have killed? DANG!!! God is freaking violent, I hate this guy!"
Has it occured to you that it is scientifically impossible for the world to be created like that. The story is merely there to show gods deep omnipresence and oomnipotence which i can accept that i don't even begin to understand.

Now, I don't believe in him for personal reasons, but if he did exist, I would not worship him and spend most of my time trying to find how to scientifically copy gods' genetic makeup (assuming he's organic, since we were apparently made in his image) and copy his powers to create an alternate divine fate for humans where death does not result in some arbitrary judgement based on oft silly laws.

Good grief. Milkshake, your post characterizes what is killing Christianity. The tolerant, willing to compromise his faith Christian who will do anything to avoid appearing different from your typical pagan. That is what will kill our faith, not the 'Fundies' as you call people who decide to stick up for what they believe, and not bend every time someone looks at them crosswise.

Basically, it's like this. Jesus referenced the first few chapters of Genesis, and Genesis is referenced throughout the New Testament. Saying that these chapters are nothing but a figment of someone's imagination is calling Jesus a liar, and erodes the entire basis for your faith. See Matthew 19:4, Acts 4:24, Acts 17:25, Romans 1:20, Colossians 1:16, 1 Timothy 2:13 for more information. The beginning of John too.

One is Kas's way, which if it were true, would mean God is a jerk and a horrible person and doesn't deserve all those powers he somehow acquired.
The other is Milkshake's way, which I preffer, where the bible was written by mortals and thus is probably filled with innaccuracies and mistakes and a few exagerations. This I can accept, like those stories with morals parents tell children to help them understand why you should be good. Those are ok, if you don't take them literally and instead look for the moral meaning.
Now Jesus could quote it and not be a liar, in the same way you can quote fiction and not be a liar. If I say the elves at Helms' Deep had golden armour, you couldn't say I was a liar because there was never REALLY a helms' deep or elves, could you? See, it works out.
