With the release of the G5s, I would expect the lesser (but still entirely sweet) models like the g4's to go down in price. Considerabley.

Actually, to Apple's credit, they are catching up.

There's an official apple retailer and tech place thingy close to me and they're pretty up to date with the rest of the PC hardware out there.

I suppose dissing macs is a little too much fun.

Macs are still overpriced when compared to a similarly powered PC.

Is there a way to upgrade the processor on your current computer, or are you stuck with the processor you have?

The best computer I saw at Circuit city had a 3.0 GHz Processor, 1024 MB DDR-DRAM, 48xMAX CD-ROM Drive, and a Radeon 9800 PRO Graphics Card. It ran for about 2,500$

Vice, check all those part with prices at www.pricewatch.com

You'll get a good idea of how bad you are getting ripped off.

And yes, you can upgrade the current CPU. Just make sure you get someone who knows what they're doing. CPU's are messy if you fudge them up.

Figure out what motherboard you have, and google around to find out what's the processor limit.

What's your current system, btw?

The one I play my computer games on is a Compaq Presario. Our current processor is a 300 MHz AMD Athlon processor, a cool thing in it's day. I'm seriously building my own computer now, just for gaming. Just some prices for items on tiger direct:
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.4 GHz: 176.99$
TMD Socket 478 Thermal Cooler Fan: 24.99$
AV41 Socket 478 Motherboard: 49.99$
or
8IPE 1000 Pro Socket 478 Motherboard: 109.99$
3 DIMM/3 GB SDRAM ???$
or
4 DIMM/4 GB DDR400

Plus:
Video Card: 150$
CD-ROM: 30$

Hard Drive: Already Have
Network/Online Connection: Already Have, a Wireless DSL 2.4 GHz Connection.

Total Cost: Around 500$

If you go with an AMD processor, you'll shave some money off that. I have a 2100 + and I'm very happy with it, eighty bucks.

How do you tell how much GHz or MHz an AMD has in it's system?

MHz (and thusly, GHz) is no longer a reliable estimate of the power of a system. A 64 bit 1200 MHz system will outperform a 2.0 GHz system easily, if similarly configured.

The Athlon chips are numbered to loosely correlate to the Intel chip they compete with. My 2100 + runs at 1.73 GHz, but will outperform a 2.1 GHz by Intel -- or so I've heard.
