D)Air friction would cause at least some of it to rip off.

Id estimate a good 5-6km would still come smashing down...
Consider any Asteroid impact scenario, missles arn't an option becuase they only serve to shatter the asteroid, cuasing one large impact to become many different impacts equaling to the same magnitude.

Breaking it into smaller parts makes a difference. The smaller the surface area that impacts at once decreases the destrution caused, can SAVE lives, and decreases the possibility of a nuclear winter. If broken into small enough parts that is.

More surface area would hit the planet, resulting in more widespread destruction.
Think about it - if the SSD hits intact, all of the inside decks are simply crushed. But if it splits in half, top and bottom, you have both halves hitting -- twice as much surface area.
