Kneel Before Zod!
I've never had any problems with Windows XP or any Windows for that matter. I've never had any problem with Explorer...*famous last words eh?*

And I think we should have an "Ask Morgan" section for computer probl--err.. questions.... :grin

Any spare change?
I'll happily stick with XP and Ubuntu until I can (re)afford a mac.

If anyone has any problems I am more than happy to help.

And Sir Sethet, what do you find troubling with Windows XP?
Norton is the worst, most bloated anti-virus suite available. Do yourself a favor and ditch it last week for NOD32. It will floor you how much more responsive your computer can be just from that. It also comparatively silent, unobtrusive and miles more effective. That is what hiring good assembly programmers can get you.

I'm right with you, except... games! Dammit! I am going to get a Mac laptop in the future, though. OS X is sexy.

Morgan: I'm ok with the McAfee I have on my laptop right now, but when I piece together my new rig this spring, I'll need a new security suite. Is NOD32 free?

Also, I plan on having a Core 2 Duo E6600 (or around there), one of the 8800 GTS cards (unless something more appealing comes out between now and then), and a 10,000 rpm HD (150 gig or less, bc I'm using an external for storage). How beefy of a PSU do you think I'll need? I've been trying to decide on a case recently. Some of them come with PSUs, some without. Most of the included ones are about 450 sometimes 500 watts though. Will I need higher than that? Is it smarter to go with my own PSU, or do any of those more quality cases have worthy built in power supplies?

NOD32 is not free, but it is worth it. I'm running AVG right now, which, despite being free, I consider superior to McAfee or Norton. If you're running an 8 series GeForce, get an SLi approved CPU. They're such pigs. Some quality cases have good power supplies. When do you plan on building this?

with an 8800 gts card you should fine with something around 500w. If you plan on upgrading the card later or making it sli you should get something a little more powerful.

I'm actually starting a custom computer building business and also going to sell computer hardware and software, so if you like msg me when your ready to buy parts and I'll see if I can get you a better price than other online stores :).

edit: I have microsoft live oneCare and really like it. I haven't had any problems and it cleans up all my spyware and adware too. It also runs automatic backups and computer tuneups. Plus it runs great in the background while using almost no ram or cpu, so it doesn't slow down my computer like norton or mcafee and it load out really fast. Its the best antivirus I've tried and updates everyday. I've never used NOD though.

personally I've been running it since beta and its been stable with all hardware, new and old. some people have problems, but is sounds like mostly drivers, which have nothing to do with vista itself. hardware companies have to speed up driver developement that's all. all my drivers work, however.

It's your choice though. I have no problems whatsoever.

my computer is pretty new and hasn't been tainted with the internet yet. I guess if I put it on I would have time to put security measures on it before I'm being invaded with pop ups.

lol yeah you will, or just discontect from the net when you install vista, set up antivirus and all that before hand and then let it roam free on the net.
