What makes me laugh is the idea that people believe their rights and freedoms are assured by a piece of paper. Law is the contrivancy of society, an imperfect and faillible perspective on How-Things-Are.

No, it's the pretense of that piece of paper.

What keeps citizens protected are the citizens themselves. Period. Where they fail, the failure is theirs, not the failure of a document.
