No, because the Separatists were actually kicking the Republic's ass for a time being. And they were led by uber cool leaders. And their ships were cool too. The Coalition lacks all three of these. They are more like the Trade Federation than the Seperatist as a whole.

Actually, come to think of it, you may be right. The Trade Federation is led by a bunch of Nemodians, that are very basic, pretty ugly, and very, err...dumb. The only thing they know how to do is to take orders from a sadistic and evil madman named Cee...Err...Sidious.
Maybe the Galactic Coalition is very comparable to the Old Republic. It has it's up and downs, but is ultimatley doomed to failure.

Naw, you can branch off with the Seperatists, because anyone with alot of money, land, brains, power or information on the Republic could get in...
Ya just say it's like the Seperatist leaders are off doing their own thing, and are thusforth of unattaninable rank.
