I though Yom Kippur was supposed to be either a day of rememberance, or of asking for forgiveness of sins commited the past year, in the Jewish Holiday Calender, or whatever.

Thats the message of Yom Kippur, but its actually a positive message, the idea behind it is that they are forgiven of their sins, etc. etc. It is comparable to the Christian Easter.
