So if a waiter serves a party of 7, takes forever to come for drink orders, spills water on the diners, and gives them the wrong kind of pizza, they still get tipped 18% by law?

Does not play well with others

I'm from the northern midwest and I & my fiance` tip well above 18% everytime we go out to eat. We get good service at the places we frequent so our server makes a minimum of $10 for their tip. And yes, adding 18% to the bill for parties over a certain amount is standard across the country. If you and your party are not satisfied with the service, speak to the manager. The tip will be lowered.

I will never understand the whole tipping thing.

You are paid to do your job. You do so, and if in doing so you please your clients, then you are given a tip above and beyond your pay. Completely without obligation and based only on the quality of service you receive.

This system makes sense. Your 'forced tipping' BS doesn't.

Pizza is the worst. Apparently drivers were making too much money on tips (more then their salary) so all the pizza places out here have added a 10% "delivery" charge that goes to them, and not the driver. So... do you tip the driver? It's not his fault his company is a greedy self-serving corporate entity. But then again, it's not your fault either.

I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I tip when somebody really deserves a tip. If they put forth an effort, I'll give them something extra. But I mean, this tipping automatically, that's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.

I always wondered why Pizza costs so much more for delievery despite the fact that they don't say anything on the coupons about added charges. Although Papa John's and Hungry Howies doesn't charge as much as Pizza Hut, and Dominoes.

Because they quote the actual price, then give you a discount if you pick it up. It's perfectly legal, just sneaky.

You guys who don't live in America don't seem to understand.

Waiters only make about $2.50 an hour. A full week's paycheck, after taxes are taken out, is about $2.

They live on their tips, not their salary. Literally.

EDIT: Pizza delivery drivers make minimum wage ($5.25). And Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Dominoes, etc., don't charge extra for delivery. At least not around here.
