Welcome to TRF! Don't listen to everyone who clamors for you to join their group, everyone wants members.
I would personally suggest that you freelance for awhile. Just putz in the Battlegrounds (which, despite its name, is not just for fighting) and lurk. Read the role-plays, surf group boards, and try get a handle on the place.
It would be a good idea to read the Rules too, there's a link in one of the menu's at the top of the board. Don't worry too much about the fleet rules, they take awhile to get used to.
As for the activity, yeah, it can be pretty active here. This is the peak time of activity, after people get home from school and work.

As a postscript, as you read the OOC forum you'll probably notice that some topics can get quite heated. Don't worry, it's pretty normal. Most of the members here have been members for quite a long time, and are well acquainted.
