Give the rules and FAQ's a read, once you've done that, either lurk and learn, or jump right in.
Joining a faction is useful because more experienced members can guide you, but it is not necessary if you wish to remain a free agent.
The Battlegrounds is where we roleplay (mostly) and there or either the Astoria is a good place to start.
If you wish to join an RP already in play, ask by posting a message in the OOC forum, also do likewise if you wish for people to jump into one of yours.
If not go right ahead and start writing.
