Supreme Commander, Skygge's Empire
I am, like Ithron, a newb by the standards of the board. Heck, some of you veterans have been around for what, six, seven years? I've had my share of screw-ups, notably the thing with Mandalore and the episode with Skygge when I was just learning how to RP as a Force user here. But nothing has been said or done to run me off the boards.

I'll admit, much of the OOC environment is not to my liking. The constant profanity grates on me, but that is mostly because of my religious beliefs. I can't control the actions of others, and I don't attempt to do so. I read the threads that seem interesting, ignore what I find offensive, and get on with my life. Personally, I find the OOC debates over IC issues fun, to a point. When it moves past debate to illogical argument, I get sick of it, but if it remains civil and logical I love it. If you don't, though, then ignore it. Don't get all worked up because two other RPers want to have a reasonable debate.

As for the speed of the posts, I can't keep up with it now. I have a full load in college, I work, and I'm the assistant chaplain at a retirement home (not to mention the fact that I have a half-hour commute every day). When I do post, I like to make them well-thought-out and write something that is enjoyable to read. I also like to challenge myself with longer posts, like I did in "Sands of Time" (3399 words, if I remember correctly). So if I take my time to write posts, good! That means either I'm focusing on my responsibilities in real life, which is good, or that I'm crafting a post rather than slapping down the first thing that comes to mind.

The only thing I can totally agree with Ishara on is that the hijacking of threads needs to be curbed. I don't mind if someone hijacks a thread meant to provide levity, but when I post something serious, I expect serious responses. And responses actually related to the topic. Take, for example, my latest R&D. I understand the concerns of several members of the community, but those concerns should have been voiced either in a PM or, if they were something the poster felt the entire community should be a part of, at least in the OOC forum. Not for two pages at the bottom of the R&D.

Other than that, I agree with Ithron. TRF is fine. Sure, we might become angry with the occassional RPer and rip his or her head off (though I try to do it calmly through PMs, others aren't so gracious), we are still a community that, for the most part, respects those who respect them. I, for one, am glad to have the opportunity to sit at the feet of such as Simon and Dolash and learn from them ways to improve my writing.

I am like, getting married. Less than a month now. I am also looking at homes so my typical 6 posts in one evening has turned to 1 post in 6 days.

Seth has gotten married and probably hasn't figured out a way to get out from the "ball and chain" of captivity...heh. Titus is getting married...

The Staff is going to be scarce over the summer. This is nothing new and Titus is right, What exactly are we going to ban you over Ishara?

We are really really easy going and the TRF community is a bit odd (like that messed up step child or cousin that every family has but doesn't talk about). I think our eccentricities is what adds to our diversity and incredible writing. We aren't cookie cutter members and writers and we don't encourage newbies to be.

Sometimes our easy going manner does get us into trouble and something flares up. But it usually dies down after a bit and we move on.

Anyway, I am being pulled away by my fiance as we need to go eat dinner.

Any spare change?
The community is rude and at times cruel toward new roleplayers

Even though I'm nothing more than a casual observer these days, I have to agree with that comment, at least to an extent.

Whilst the blanket label of "the community" certainly does not apply here, certain individuals have a less-than-savoury attitude toward the occasional newcomer.

Furthermore, with that in mind, I would suggest that even the most "omgwtfkthxbye111bbq" newbies that come to the board, ie those who are that grade above the bot spammers that seem to appear daily, are treated with the utmost respect and deceny and not ridiculed or ribbed . . . as tempting as it may seem.

Take from this what you will, but I certainly wouldnt have become involved to the extent that I did in this community if I had recieved some of the treatment I have seen delivered to newbie visitors as of late. Lord knows, back when I first started, I would have been classified as 'deserving' of such barbs. By no means do I speak for Kas, but for example, given that he and I started at a similar time, I could hedge a decent bet that he would concur with my assessment if similarly treated upon his arrival.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that the newbie, no matter who they are is TRF's first point of contact in making a good name, treat those who visit the board -whatever their grasp of the english language- with the same grace you treat the veterans who've been here for yonks.

*steps off soapbox*

Quick question here: Do we even have any moderators here on the boards? It wouldn't hurt to take a couple of people, and give them limited admin powers, or make them a moderator. If the moderators can't handle something, call in the admin. The admins shouldn't have to take care of everything.

Yes we do. I believe Beff and Dolash are moderators.

I have to agree, the staff does kind of need to grab a couple stand-in staff members to attend to matters while they're all off getting hitched and settling down... you guys are doing an excellent job despite how busy you are with your RL's: you deserve a break, get some help!

Reguarding newer members, I would like to reference this thread (I don't care if you think it's stupid or not, it happened) as evidence that newer members do very clearly have problems handling TRF's atmosphere. But there are older members who are making a solid effort to help newbies out, and they should be commended. Wes is working with TDA in the Astoria, Corise has started an RP with Jalyne in the BGs, Ithron and Beff freely offer greetings and advice to visitors and new members alike... and there's always a whole slew of amiable greetings when a person posts an "I'm new" thread. I think it's not as bad as it seems, though as always it could be much better.

As for you Kamon... I do not have sole power over Force ranks on this board (although at many points in TRF history I have) and I hold no sway over what the rest of the Force Council votes. Four votes from four experienced Force Masters in good standing with the board turned up four explicit no's, plus a staff member's opinion of no. This decision was reached based on your lack of RPs reguarding your development in the Force and your noted inactivity as a Force User. The decision was not made simply because "we don't like your style." In my considerable experience the most reasonable course of action would be for you to remain a Knight, and seriously work on your RPing for a while like you said you were going to. Then you would re-up for promotion when you had a solid return under your belt with a minimal amount of drama. Seemed like a fair idea to me, anyways. If *anyone* should be whining about promotions it's poor Irtar over there... how long have you been an apprentice now anyways?"

I am truly sorry that you feel the way you do.

As this is a leaving thread, and presumably those who posted it have left/are doing so soon, I don't see why this discussion need go on any longer as it's likely only to promote bad feelings. Such unconstructive arguments are unbecoming of TRF, and to show that the staff does recognize when a thread has reached such a point and will act on it when necessary, I declare this thread locked.

Since it's a leaving thread, I'll also presume there is no need for this discussion to be restarted.
