Return of the King of the Cafe!
I'm writing a post for Art of War, but I don't know if a Star Destroyer can back up, or if they have to turn around to do so. Do they have to go forwards to turn, or can they turn on the spot? Anyways, I couldn't find the answer, so I was wondering if someone here knew.

Where did I go right?
I think they can turn on the spot, though it's very much un-recommended, but I'm sure they can't full reverse.

They've got mainly rear engines. They've got some manuvering thrusters on the side (if memory serves me right) but they gain their movement mainly from the rear. So I don't think they can reverse, unless you have a specially made model.

I'm pretty sure they can backup. Hence why in the Bacta War the Super Star Destroyer Lusankya is facing a space station and then the captain yells "Full reverse" or something like that and he sees the space station getting farther away from him (implying they are still facing the station but are backing up.

I think they can, but it would be really slow. EPIII had a rather interesting method of turning rear engines into forward thrust.

El mas chingon!
I wonder if they make a loud beeping sound when they back up?

Well in all of my writing they had to about face to go the other direction, but I was just going by assumptions. I suppose their maneuvering engines would allow them to go in reverse, but it would be real fucking slow.

fuck that duck
The Bacta War shows they can reverse... mind, those books aren't terribly concerned with what's realistic and what isn't, but I think TRF considers them canon, so the answer would be yes.
