last night at 9:00 when i had just stepped in the door, very high on cocaine, my father called my place for the first time in months. we haven't been on speaking terms in a very long time. i once drank his entire liquor cabinet in a month and refilled the bottles with water. but you have to wonder why a teetotalling former alcoholic would keep a full liquor cabinet in the house. that is just tempting fate.

"hello son."

"hi dad. i can't believe you're calling me. i thought you and mom died or something, i don't know, or forgot how to use the phone."

silence.

"dad."

"yea. are you okay?"

"fine. very good. work is good. victoria is good."

victoria broke up with me when i showed up at her house piss drunk for the third time in a month. funny since she is attracted to the dramatics and glamour of addiction anyway. what did you expect?

"oh."

"yea."

"i wanted to wish you a happy birthday."

"what?"

i had forgotten it was my birthday.

he sent a present apparently. i don't check the mail. i don't even know where the mailbox is. or if we have a mailbox.

I happen to have a rather good relationship with my father... lucky, I guess.
