I spent a half hour typing up a post for an RP, all the while nicely logged into my account. Fun!

Except when I tried to post, I was informed I was no longer logged in and I would have to try again.

Did I mentioned when I went back, my entire post was gone?

I thought vB was supposed to not have these problems.
This is a good time because Kas is so up-tight you could stick a coal up his ass and in two weeks you would have a diamond.

That really blows; I've had it happen to me more than once. And I don't think it's a "vB vs. ezboard" thing, it's a web browers thing. I'm not entirely sure about that though.

A good rule of thumb, always do it in a word processor first.

1 - Type your post up in Word, or at least copy the blasted thing before posting. Browsers crash, computers freeze, or websites fail. If you spend a half hour typing a post, you probably want to spend two minutes spell checking it as well.

2 - I have yet to be logged out on the new board. What page were you on for the entire hour (just one, or did you surf as well?)? Did your internet connection die during that time? There might be a security timeout set somewhere here, I'll look.

Dogman speaks the truth. It's an issue with cookies, which is hard to track down to board or broswer. We could play the blame game, but it would really solve nothing.

You can check your browser settings and see if anything looks amiss. If anyone else mentions being logged out for no conceivable reason, we can try and track it down here.

But always, always write posts on your harddrive, and copy and paste into a browser. Short of a power outage or a suicidal cat, you'll never have a problem with losing a ton of work because of a minor glitch.

What does cat suicidal have to do with it?

Ok, the session cookie is set to expire after 15 minutes. I'm not going to set it higher, because this decides how long someone remains in the Who's Online box.

Though, I've left my browser open for an hour or two while I'm out to lunch, and when I came back and unlocked my computer I was still logged in.

Wouldn't the session cookie be different than the "Remember Me?" cookie?

Yeah. Session cookie is used to determine what posts are marked as unread, remember me cookie is different I believe.

That's the only cookie time value I can edit via the CP though.

So there must a separate cookie that manages a user's logged in/logged out status. I don't know if checking "Remember me?" would make a difference, but I assume it would because I can shut down my computer for the night and come back the next morning and still be logged in. I learn more about cookies next semester, I can tell you then.

Power cords are fun...
